Lock Replacement

Lock Replacement across Montgomery County

Why people call

People in Montgomery County call us for lock replacement when a latch fails, a deadbolt is stripped, a knob or lever is loose, or a lock just won’t turn anymore. Other times they want a different style or function: swapping a tubular knob for a lever, upgrading a basic cylinder to a heavier deadbolt, or removing an old mortise lock that no longer fits their needs. We’re a mobile locksmith based in Havertown and the van comes to the customer, so we do these swaps where the door already is rather than at a shop.

What the job involves

A typical job starts with us inspecting the door and the existing hardware to see what we’re working with. We remove the old knob, lever, deadbolt or mortise lock and check the door edge, jamb and strike plate for wear or damage. If the new lock needs different holes or a deeper mortise we carefully modify the door and frame, then fit and align the new lock, set the latch and strike so the bolt moves cleanly, and test operation with the keys. We leave the doorway functioning and tidy.

Across the county

Work varies across the county because buildings do. In Abington Township and Lower Moreland Township you’ll find many single-family doors with standard bore holes and wooden frames that take traditional knobs, levers and deadbolts. In places like King of Prussia and Norristown there are more commercial entrances, metal storefront doors and heavier frames requiring different hardware or reinforced strikes. Older houses in some towns may still have mortise locks, while newer condos and apartments use cylindrical locks and different backset arrangements; we match our replacement to the door type.

Before we arrive

Before we arrive you can make the job smoother by clearing space around the door and removing any screen or storm door that blocks access. Have all existing keys ready and decide whether you want the new lock keyed to match an existing set or supplied with its own key set; tell us that up front. If you have the make or model of the lock you’re replacing, keep that information handy, and be present or available to confirm the pick of cylinder or finish so we install the hardware the way you want it.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

More questions people ask before calling.

If my deadbolt is worn, will replacing it mean drilling new holes in my door?

We start by checking the existing bore and backset. If the new deadbolt matches those measurements, we can use the current holes and align the strike. If the replacement has different dimensions or the door edge is damaged, we carefully enlarge or mortise as needed and fit the new hardware so it operates smoothly.

Can you swap my old door knob for a lever or a stronger deadbolt on the same door?

We measure the bore, latch location and door thickness first. Converting a knob to a lever usually requires only a compatible latch and handing; installing a deadbolt often needs a separate upper bore and reinforcement at the strike. We install the appropriate latch or deadbolt, cut or mortise where necessary, and test the mechanism.

What happens to the old locks after you replace them, do I get them back or dispose of them?

We ask whether you want the old locks returned, kept for parts, or taken away. If you want disposal, we remove and responsibly recycle or discard the hardware. We also reinstall or adjust the strike and trim, test the new lock several times, and leave the door functioning without loose screws or debris.
