What tends to cause it
Keys fail or are lost for a few predictable reasons. Metal fatigue from frequent bending produces hairline cracks that propagate until a blade snaps in the lock; thin, stamped blanks are especially prone to that. Water, salt and corrosion can ruin the switch contacts in a remote or seize an ignition cylinder. Electronic failure happens when a remote’s coin-cell battery runs down or corrodes the contacts, or when a key has been dropped or soaked often enough to damage the electronics inside. Key damage also results from forcing a jammed door or using the key as a pry tool.
