The buildings and the hardware
The building stock in South Philadelphia affects the hardware we encounter. Many doors are original wood with mortise lockcases that were installed decades ago; those locks wear differently than modern bored deadbolts and often need deeper repair or a mortise-to-cylinder conversion. You also find multi-family doors with surface-mounted night latches, older apartment entry systems with simple mailbox locks, and storefronts with rim or exit-device hardware exposed to frequent use. Those conditions mean we commonly patch worn strike plates, fit longer screws into rotted frames, or modify trim so a modern cylinder will operate cleanly in an older door.
