The buildings and the hardware
The buildings here tend to mix older houses, multi-unit apartment entrances, and commercial storefronts, and that variety changes the locks you find. Older wood doors often have mortise locks or worn cylindrical latches; apartment entries can have master-keyed systems or surface-mounted hardware; storefronts typically use metal doors with heavy-duty exit devices and rim cylinders. That means frequent issues with warped frames, out-of-plumb doors, and latch misalignment rather than just a bad cylinder. Retrofits are common: fitting modern deadbolts to legacy doors, swapping out old mortise hardware for more serviceable components, or reinforcing jambs so locks do their job.
