The buildings and the hardware
The building stock here affects the hardware we see. Many single-family homes still have full-size wooden doors with mortise or bored locks; those require different strikes and thicker backset measurements than apartment hardware. Multiunit buildings tend to use metal-entry doors with cylindrical locks and sometimes master key systems, while storefronts often have aluminum frames, surface-mounted closers and commercial deadbolts. Old doors can be warped, holes can be oversized for modern cylinders, and many replacements need longer screws, reinforced strike plates or a switch from a surface-mounted latch to a flush-mounted deadbolt to get the hardware to work safely.
