The buildings and the hardware
The building stock in this area means we see a lot of varied hardware. Many doors are solid wood or metal exterior doors with mortise-style locks or cylindrical deadbolts; you'll also find older hollow-core interior doors and light-gauge aluminum storm doors. Small multi-family units and local storefronts bring latchsets with thin strike plates and short screws that loosen over time; older mortise locks can have worn faceplates and nonstandard screw patterns. That variety changes the job: sometimes it’s swapping to a heavier latch and longer screws, other times fitting a cylinder that matches an odd cut or pounding out rusted fixed pins.
