The buildings and the hardware
The housing stock here tends toward single-family houses with a fair share of split-level and ranch homes, plus some duplexes; that affects locks and doors. Older doors often have mortise or rim locks that need different parts and fitting than modern bored-door cylindrical locks, and frames may need reinforcing or shimming to accept a new, heavier deadbolt. Apartment or townhouse units more often have apartment-grade hardware and electronic intercom access to consider. The right tool and the right cylinder make the difference; we work on both older mortise mechanisms and contemporary bored locks and can advise on replacing rather than repairing if the door or frame is undersized.
