What goes wrong
Locks fail in predictable ways: keys snap in cylinder cores, deadbolts bind, thumbturns shear, and electronic cylinders lose power or stop communicating with a fob. For emergency calls in Overbrook we respond from our mobile van in Havertown and focus on diagnosing the immediate fault first. We look at the cylinder, the bolt and the strike, test the keyway for bent or worn cuts, and check whether a lever handle has popped off its spindle. Knowing the physical cause tells us whether to extract, repair, or replace parts on the spot.

What the job involves
When a key breaks or a deadbolt refuses to retract we start with non-destructive methods whenever the hardware allows. We use slot extractors, broken-key grips, pick sets, plug spinners, and torque tools suited to the cylinder type. If a lock is visibly compromised (a split cylinder, a fractured tailpiece, or a torn strike), we may remove the lock and fit a replacement mortise or cylindrical unit and a strengthened strike plate. For electronic locks we isolate power, test batteries and wiring, and replace failing modules when necessary.

Good to know
If you call us from inside your home or car, the first priority is safety and securing the scene. Stay where you are if the situation feels unsafe; if you can move to a well-lit, sheltered spot gather any occupants and pets and don’t try to force the lock. If you’re outside and the door is unlocked but the latch won’t hold, keep the door closed and brace it with a secondary lockable device or wedge until we arrive. Tell us whether a key is present, whether glass near the lock is broken, and whether any other entry points are unsecured.
04
Worth knowing
Before we get there have ready any identification for the property owner and the key that fits the lock, plus the make and model of the lock if you know it. For cars note the year, make and model and whether it uses a mechanical blade, a transponder, or a keyless fob. If you have spare keys, leave them in a known place or tell us where they are so we can try them. We keep common cylinders, bolts, screws and electronic modules on the van; if a part needs replacement we’ll explain what we’re fitting and show you the new hardware before we install it.
