The buildings and the hardware
The housing stock here affects the hardware we see. Many homes have solid-core or older wooden doors with mortise or rim locks, while newer subdivisions and townhouse units use cylindrical bored locks and jamb-mounted deadbolts. Apartment complexes bring keyed-alike suites and master-key concerns; storefronts require commercial-grade lever locks, exit devices, and sometimes panic bar servicing. Older doors often need retrofitted latch plates, longer deadbolt screws, or conversion from mortise to modern deadbolt standards. Knowing which lock type is on the door changes the parts and method: a mortise case needs different punches and replacement cores than a bored cylindrical lock.
