What goes wrong
Doors sticking, keys that won't turn, or a bolt that slides only halfway are the calls we get most from West Chester homes. Often the problem is wear inside a cylinder, a swollen wood edge that pinches a latch, or a strike plate that has pulled away so the bolt no longer catches. We diagnose by testing the cylinder, checking the door's fit in the frame, and inspecting the strike and screws. If a keyed cylinder is worn we rekey or replace it with one that matches the existing keyway and tailpiece length.

What the job involves
If a deadbolt turns with wobble or a thumbturn jams, we look at the tailpiece, the cam, and the bolt face to find the mechanical cause rather than guessing. We carry common cylinder types, tubular latches, mortise parts, and compact electric keypad modules suited to a homeowner’s existing door prep. We drive out from Havertown and bring the hand tools, picks, key machine, and a small selection of blanks and cylinders so we can cut and fit a working key on location if that’s what the door needs.

Good to know
While you wait, clear a working area around the door and move fragile items out of the immediate work zone. Keep children and pets in another room. Have any spare keys, photos of the lock, or the make and model of a keypad or smart lock handy on your phone; that helps us confirm parts. If you’ve lost keys, tell us whether there are exterior windows or secondary entrances we should consider; if you still have a working spare, keep it out of sight and let us know so we can plan the most secure approach.

Worth knowing
For installations or upgrades we describe what the job will involve before we start: mortising a new deadbolt pocket if the door edge is narrow, enlarging or reinforcing the strike area with longer screws and a plate that sits tight against the jamb, or swapping a cylinder and cutting matching keys. We use screws long enough to engage solid wood behind the frame, full-length strikes where the frame allows, and solid forged bolts rather than thin, stamped parts. Serving West Chester and nearby West Goshen Township, we aim to leave doors operating smoothly and keys that turn without binding.
