What goes wrong
Lock problems at home usually start with one of a few simple failures: a snapped key stuck in a cylinder, a deadbolt that won’t fully throw because the strike is misaligned, a knob that spins without engaging, or a warped door edge that rubs the latch. We see jammed mortise locks, rim cylinders with worn tumblers, and electronic deadbolts whose batteries or wiring fail. In Ridley Park houses the most common calls are for broken key extraction, rekeying after a move, and replacing damaged bolts or strike plates so the lock actually engages the frame.

What the job involves
When we work on a residential lock we begin with a quick inspection to identify the mechanical problem: whether the cylinder is failing, the bolt needs a longer throw, the strike needs reinforcement, or the door geometry must be adjusted. We pick or extract broken keys, decode cylinders for new keys when pins are salvageable, and swap cores or entire locksets when parts are beyond reuse. If a deadbolt requires a reinforced strike plate or longer screws into the framing we fit those pieces, and if an electronic lock is present we check batteries, wiring harnesses, and any keypad connections.

Good to know
While we are en route, secure other entry points and keep children and pets away from the door area so we can work safely. Have photo ID ready and be prepared to show proof of residency if we are changing cylinders or handing over new keys; we do this to avoid mistaken access. If you can, clear clutter around the door, move a rug that might hide screws or small parts, and take a quick photo of the lock face and strike; those images often tell us which parts to bring when we drive out from Havertown.

Worth knowing
Before we start, have any spare keys, the existing cylinder or lock trim, and information about the door handy: is it solid or hollow core, what direction it swings, and whether the frame is metal or wood. If you have an electronic or smart lock, note the brand and model and any alarm or access codes you’ll need disconnected for the job. We handle deadbolts, knob and lever sets, mortise hardware, and electronic modules; in Ridley Park and nearby Prospect Park we replace worn tumblers, fit reinforced strikes, and hand over cut keys or new cylinders once the work is done.
