What goes wrong
Homes in Old City call us when a key snaps in a cylinder, a deadbolt won’t turn, or a latch no longer catches because the frame or strike has shifted. We see stuck mortise cylinders, swollen wooden doors rubbing against the jamb, and knobs whose screws have worked loose. We work on glass-paned entrance doors as often as on solid-core units, and we handle lever sets, mortise locks, and cylinders that need extraction. We drive out from Havertown for every job and bring the tools commonly required for repair or replacement at the door.

What the job involves
If you’re locked out, we ask that you stand somewhere safe and keep the door area clear so we can work without obstacles. If you’ve lost the last copy of a key, tell us whether there’s a spare at a neighbor or with a friend. For electronic or keypad locks, have the keypad code, any backup keys, and the lock’s batteries accessible if you can. If the cylinder is visible but the key won’t turn, leave the broken key end in place until we can extract it; sometimes partial engagement stabilizes the mechanism.

Good to know
When a cylinder or knob has to be swapped we remove the damaged hardware and fit a replacement that matches the door thickness and backset, and we cut and code new keys on site where possible. For a reinforced deadbolt we check the strike and jamb, and if the bolt won’t extend fully we address the bolt, tailpiece, and inside spindle to correct binding. We carry extra screws and reinforced strikes for repairs and will adjust the latch alignment so the door closes cleanly rather than relying on temporary shimming.

Worth knowing
For electronic locks, we diagnose whether the issue is a battery, wiring problem, or a failed motor; we replace batteries and motors and reprogram keypads where the manufacturer’s tools allow it. If you’re preparing for a service visit in Center City, Queen Village or nearby Philadelphia neighborhoods, gather proof of residence like a lease or utility bill and have any existing keys and the lock’s user manual handy. We’ll explain the work we recommend and the parts involved in plain terms so you can decide what you want done.
