What goes wrong
Most residential calls start with a simple failure: a deadbolt that won’t throw cleanly, a latch that rides the jamb, a knob that spins without catching, or a key that breaks off in a cylinder. We see worn pins, corroded tailpieces, and strike plates that have pulled away from the framing. In older houses the issue is often a warped door or rotted frame that keeps a solid, forged deadbolt from seating. We work on these exact failures and explain what failed, what needs replacing, and what can be adjusted to restore proper mechanical function.

What the job involves
When we work on a lock we disassemble the cylinder or trim to inspect pins, springs, and the cam or tailpiece; we check the bolt for burrs and the strike for alignment; and we measure throw, backset, and centerline to confirm the right hardware fit. If a key snapped we extract the broken piece, clean the cylinder, and test with a new key. If hardware needs replacing we fit the new lock, set the strike so the bolt compresses cleanly, and test the operation with several keys and the door closed.

Good to know
If you call from Avondale we’ll tell you clearly when we can come and what to expect in terms of process. While you wait we recommend leaving the door unlocked if you’re comfortable doing so, or sitting where you can supervise the work. Have identification for the home owner ready and any original keys, spare cylinders, or documentation about prior work. If there are children or pets, secure them away from the work area; we bring basic hand tools, replacement screws, and common cylinders but having existing keys and proof of ownership speeds the job.

Worth knowing
We handle rekeys, cylinder swaps, storm-door cylinders, mortise locks, deadbolts with long throws, knob and lever sets, and reinforcing strike plates when the jamb needs support. We drive out from Havertown to jobs across Chester County and the surrounding area, and we’ll describe whether a repair, rekey, or full replacement is the better mechanical solution for your door. If you live near Toughkenamon or New Garden Township and the problem is a rusted mechanism or a door that drags, we’ll show you the worn parts and explain the necessary fixes before we start.
