The buildings and the hardware
The area’s buildings tend to produce a mix of hardware issues. Older wooden doors commonly have mortise locks, rim cylinders or deep-set latches that need different tools and parts than modern prepped doors, and warped frames mean strike plates and thresholds often need reinforcement or custom adjustment. Newer homes use bored cylindrical deadbolts and standard backsets, which are quicker to fit but still require careful alignment for smooth operation. Storefronts and commercial doors typically have heavier duty panic hardware or metal frames and sometimes require rim exit devices or replacement cylinders that meet commercial security demands.
