What goes wrong
Doors at small offices, retail storefronts and multi-tenant buildings bring a steady list of failures we see in Merion: broken key in a cylinder, jammed mortise locks, worn latches, warped doors that catch, exit devices that won’t latch cleanly, failing door closers, and access-control panels that stop responding. Often the problem is mechanical wear or corrosion where a forged latch meets a reinforced strike, or a keypad whose wiring has been pulled loose. We drive out from Havertown and work on the hardware where it is; we do not meet customers at a shop.

What the job involves
On site we start with a hands-on assessment of the door and frame, looking for binding, loose fasteners, split jambs or strike misalignment. For cylinders we remove cores and inspect pins and plug; for mortise locks we check bolt engagement and lever geometry. For electronic systems we isolate power and trace wiring to the controller, test input devices and replace batteries or modules as needed. If a master key system or rekey is requested we clean the cylinder, cut and code new cores, and then verify every key in the system operates as intended.

Good to know
While we’re en route you should secure the immediate area and keep staff clear of the door opening so we can work safely. Have an authorized representative meet us and be prepared to confirm which keys or keycards should remain active. If access control is involved, gather any existing documentation for the system, the current keycard or FOB, and note who needs entry and when. If a panic bar or exit device is involved, keep the corridor clear and, if possible, post temporary signage that the door is under repair until we finish.

Worth knowing
Because we are a mobile service every job happens where the lock is; we don’t have a counter to drop off hardware. To speed the process gather what you can before we arrive: the broken key, any existing master key lists, photos of the door edge showing lock type, and contact info for building management. If rekeying or a new master system for several doors is on the agenda, bring a list of the doors and which groups need shared access. We’ll work through the options with you on site and leave the hardware ready for normal use.
