What goes wrong
Most lockouts happen for simple, mechanical reasons: keys left on the seat, a door that slams and deadlocks, a trunk latch that sticks, or a key that snaps in the ignition. We see frozen or gummed-up cylinders, worn key bitting that no longer turns smoothly, and electronic fob batteries that die without warning. In Lower Frederick Township we handle all of those failures. We explain what failed and why, point out if a door has a damaged striker or a bent latch, and let you know whether the car will need a replacement key or only an entry.

What the job involves
When we get to a vehicle we first do a visual inspection of the door and lock: rim cylinders, vertical locks, keypads, and the condition of the seals and glass. We favor non-destructive entry where possible, using air wedges, long-reach tools, appropriate pry points and lockpick sets for pin-tumbler cylinders. If a key has broken in the lock we extract the fragment, and if the ignition is damaged we can supply and cut a blank or program a transponder as needed. We carry blanks, key blades, extraction tools and programmers so we can often finish the work at the vehicle.

Good to know
While you wait, keep yourself and any passengers in a safe spot off the roadway and away from traffic. Lock or secure other doors if it’s safe to do so, and turn off the dome light to avoid draining the vehicle battery. If you have a spare key at home or with someone nearby, tell us where it is; if you tried to force the door, tell us exactly what you used so we can check for damaged hardware. In Lower Frederick Township or when passing through Spring Mount, we will talk you through simple steps to avoid causing more harm before we arrive.

Worth knowing
Have a few items ready to speed the process: photo ID and the vehicle registration or title to prove ownership, the vehicle identification number if you can access it, and any information about aftermarket alarms, steering locks or deadbolts that might be fitted. If the key has distinguishable wear, a photo of the key helps; if a fob isn’t working, bring any spare fob or the battery type. We drive out from Havertown with tools and blanks, and preparing those documents and details makes the repair straightforward and keeps work on the actual lock.
