The buildings and the hardware
The built environment in this part of Philadelphia affects the hardware we see. A lot of doors are older solid wood or metal-and-wood composites with mortise slots, narrow stile storefront doors, or hollow-core apartment entries; that means mortise locks, rim cylinders, and surface-mounted hardware turn up more often than suburban tubular latch sets. Older installations often have worn or thin strike plates, loose faceplates, or light-gauge knobs that need reinforcement. Apartment buildings bring keyed-alike or master-key arrangements and tenant turnover jobs; rowhouse entries require bolt upgrades, heavier strikes, and attention to fitting replacement locks into existing cutouts.
