The buildings and the hardware
The age and type of buildings here affect the hardware we see. Many houses have solid wood doors with older cylindrical or mortise locks that need different keys or deeper seats in the door edge, while some recent builds use thinner, stamped metal doors with light-gauge latch assemblies that shear more easily. Apartment units tend to have keyed deadbolts on a single surface-mounted jamb or simple keyed knobs, and commercial storefronts often use heavier backset locks and steel frames that require reinforced strike plates. That variety means the job can range from a straightforward cylinder swap to fitting a new latch and reinforcing the surrounding wood or metal.
