What goes wrong
Keys break, cylinders stick, and door latches stop lining up; those are the common problems we see in Somerton homes. A key stuck in a worn pin-tumbler cylinder, a deadbolt that won’t throw because the strike plate has pulled away, or a mortise lock with a seized lever all look similar to a homeowner: the lock won’t operate or the key won’t turn. We also get calls about patio sliding locks, mailbox cores seized from weather, and interior passage knobs that have sheared screws or stripped spindles.

What the job involves
When we arrive we first inspect the door, frame and hardware to identify what failed: a brittle key, a mushroomed pin, a bent tailpiece, or a fractured cam. We extract broken keys, pick cylinders without cutting unless extraction fails, rekey or replace cores, and swap out worn cylinders and deadbolts. We prefer to repair if the parts are serviceable and stronger to replace when the metal’s fatigued. We drive out from Havertown with common cylinders, picks, extraction tools, pin kits and a selection of deadbolts and strike plates.

Good to know
While you wait, have a government ID or a utility bill that shows the address ready and, if possible, the key or keys that belong to the lock. Clear the area in front of the door so we can work safely and move pets away from the work zone. If the door has a screen or storm door, unlatch it for easier access. If there are photos of the lock or hinge area on your phone, those can save time; otherwise tell us what happened and what you’ve already tried.

Worth knowing
For a longer-term fix, decide whether you want the replacement to match the existing trim or to change to a heavier duty option: a solid deadbolt with a long throw and a reinforced strike with long screws, a cylinder that uses a replaceable core, or an electronic keypad or Bluetooth-style lock that runs on batteries. We can fit heavy-duty screws in the hinge and strike, fit a reinforced door edge, or swap in a lock that lets you rekey quickly if keys are lost. If you have questions about parts or the work, tell us when you call and we’ll explain the differences and what we bring for Somerton jobs.
