What goes wrong
Most emergency calls start with a few familiar failures: a snapped key stuck in a pin-tumbler cylinder, a deadbolt with a bent tailpiece, a jammed latch behind a reinforced strike, or a commercial mortise that refuses to turn. We diagnose the hardware on the spot, deciding whether to extract and replace a broken key, re-pin a plug, swap in a new cylinder, or remove a seized spindle. In Brewerytown we see the full mix of older wood doors with rim locks and newer metal storefronts with lever mortise hardware; we bring the tools each job requires.

What the job involves
If a key snaps or a cylinder shreds, extraction is often the first move. We use picks, extractors, small drill bits and tension tools when the plug can be saved; when the plug is mushroomed or the tailpiece is distorted we remove the cylinder and fit a replacement. For deadbolts with long throws or reinforced strikes we check for bent bolts or warped jambs and refit hardware so the bolt rides true. For stuck knobs we examine the spindle and set screws, and for broken cams on mortise locks we cut out and install a new unit.

Good to know
While you wait on the street or at the doorstep, the safest actions are simple: stand clear of the door swing, keep kids and pets away from any open frame, and have identification ready so we can confirm property access. If you can, clear personal items away from the work area and unwrap any protective coverings on the door edge; that saves handling time. Tell us whether the lock is a keyed deadbolt, a thumbturn deadbolt, a mortise with multiple functions, or an electronic keypad; that information helps us bring the right parts. We drive out from Havertown and will tell you when we can be there.

Worth knowing
We handle vehicle lockouts as well as building locks, including trunks, glove boxes and cars with thin wafer or pin-tumbler systems. For commercial units we deal with exit devices, rim and vertical rod panic hardware, and master-keyed systems, offering on-site rekeying or cylinder replacement when locks are compromised. When a front door or storefront lock is damaged after a break-in we secure the opening with a temporary cylinder or plate and follow with a permanent fix. If you’re in Brewerytown, Fairmount, Center City or nearby, tell us the lock type and whether the key still turns or broke, and we’ll bring the right tools and spares.
