What goes wrong
Cars get locked out for a handful of common, mechanical reasons: the key breaks in the cylinder, the wafer or pin stack binds, a bent key won’t turn, or the electronic key fob stops sending a signal. Doors sometimes stick because the latch or linkage is misaligned after an impact or because the striker is pulled out of position. We work on the physical parts you can see and touch: cylinders, latches, linkages, mechanical locks and key hardware, and on the interface between a metal key and an immobilizer circuit when that’s part of the problem.

What the job involves
When we handle a car lockout in Plymouth Meeting we start by identifying exactly which component is at fault. If a key is broken in the lock we extract what’s left without damaging the cylinder and assess whether the keyway needs repair or the cylinder needs replacement. If the issue is a jammed latch or a frozen link between door handle and latch we free the parts and restore the mechanical movement. For vehicles with keyless entry we check the fob battery and the receiver circuit and use non-destructive entry methods whenever possible.

Good to know
While you wait you can make the job go smoothly by staying close to the vehicle and keeping the doors and trunk area clear. Have the vehicle registration or title available and be prepared to prove ownership, and if you have the spare key or the key code, have that ready too. It helps if the vehicle is turned off, parked with the steering unlocked, and in a safe position out of traffic. We drive out from Havertown and bring hand tools, pick sets, extractor tools, a selection of replacement cylinders and a stock of common key blanks so we can work on site.

Worth knowing
We deal with ignition and key issues that look similar to door lock problems: a snapped key in the ignition, an ignition cylinder that won’t turn, or wear that lets the key slip instead of engaging the tumblers. In those cases we inspect the cylinder, extract broken metal, and assess whether the cylinder or the key itself is the right next step. If a replacement key is needed we cut a new one to the original profile and cut or prepare a fob if required. If you’re in Plymouth Township, Blue Bell or Conshohocken we handle the same tasks, mechanical attention to locks and keys where they’re mounted, not behind a counter.
