The buildings and the hardware
The local building stock affects the hardware people need. Older houses often still have mortise locks, rim cylinders, or heavy cast hardware that require taps, pin replacement and sometimes new faceplates to fit the door edge. Newer homes and many rental units use bored cylindrical locks, latchbolts in hollow-core doors, and thin metal pre-hung frames that need shorter screws, reinforced strike plates, or longer bolts to work properly. Storefronts and commercial entries often use aluminum doors with mortise cylinders or multipoint latches that demand a different keyway and a different approach than a typical residential deadbolt.
