What goes wrong
Locked-out cars come from a few clear mechanical and electronic failures. Sometimes keys get left in a cupholder or on the passenger seat and the doors lock behind them; other times a metal key snaps in the ignition or a fob stops talking to the car. A sticking latch, a bent linkage rod in the door, or a jammed trunk release are all things we see. In Middletown Township we handle both older mechanical locks with tumblers and newer vehicles that use a push-button or remote locking system.

What the job involves
When we get to a car we work to open it without damage whenever possible. We use inflatable wedges or small pry tools to gain a light gap at the door, then a long-reach tool to operate the interior handle or unlock button. For mechanical cylinders we can pick or extract a broken key and for transponder keys we can decode the cylinder or handle removal of the lock barrel. If destruction is unavoidable we explain why and show you the damaged part before replacing it; we drive out from Havertown and work on the vehicle at the scene.

Good to know
While you wait it helps to stand well off the road and keep children and pets at a safe distance. Have the registration or title and a photo ID ready so we can verify ownership; if a spare key is kept in the car, tell us where. Tell us the car’s make, model and year and whether you have a remote fob, a flip key, or only a metal key. If the vehicle has an alarm, try to remember any recent changes to the remote or battery replacement that might affect it.

Worth knowing
After we open the car we can extract broken keys, cut a mechanical spare on the spot, and program many types of replacement transponder fobs with our mobile equipment. We also check the latch assembly, striker plate and linking rods for damage and can replace or repair those parts to stop repeat lockouts. If a trunk release or interior handle needs a new cable or clip we can address that too. We work only from the vehicle; there’s no counter to visit and every repair happens where the lock is.
