What goes wrong
Keys left inside, a key broken at the shoulder of the blade, a fob that no longer wakes the car, or a cylinder that sticks are the things we see most on car lockout calls. In North Philadelphia drivers often discover that a key has snapped off in the ignition or the trunk latch has frozen after being pushed shut. We drive out from Havertown with the parts and blanks we commonly use so we can get to work without making a return trip for a simple repair or replacement.

What the job involves
On arrival we start by picking through the visible problem: is the key still in the lock, is the tumbler turning, is the latch mechanically accessible through the door seam, or is the vehicle responding to the fob? We remove broken key fragments, re-seat or replace worn tumblers and cylinders, and cut a new metal key on-site when the lock face can be decoded. For cars with electronic immobilizers we carry blank fobs and the equipment to match a new unit to the vehicle’s system where possible, and we replace batteries and contacts on remotes.

Good to know
While you wait, stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so and keep any existing keys and fragments together so nothing is misplaced. Have photo ID and the vehicle registration or title ready; we will check ownership before we work. Tell us the make, model and year, and whether the car has a visible aftermarket alarm, sliding door, or reinforced striker plate. If the battery in the remote seems weak, pulling that and bringing it within reach can help us test whether the fob is the issue rather than the lock.

Worth knowing
If a key has broken, save every piece and the broken tip if it fell into the ignition; reclaimed metal can help us match the original profile. For transponder-style keys note whether the key contains a plastic head or an integrated chip and whether you have a spare fob. If you are in North Philadelphia and need us to come out, be ready to tell us where the vehicle is parked, any access restrictions, and a contact number so we can coordinate. We work on the lock at the car, not at a shop, and we bring the common blanks and replacement parts needed to finish most jobs on location.
